Dear friend,
On behalf of the Network of European Foundations (NEF), I have the great pleasure of presenting a series of reports addressing specific aspects of the interaction between the state and religion as well as religion and society. These reports, released in the framework of the NEF initiative on Religion and Democracy in Europe and drafted by acknowledged experts, map existing practices and different approaches to specific issues, set in the broader context of the religion and democracy debate. They target practitioners, policy makers and civil society actors. The reports address the following questions:

These publications conclude the second phase (2008 - 2009) of the Religion and Democracy in Europe initiative. The first year of activities (2007) included a round table with specialised journalists and a series of ‘ Youth Debates’ and culminated with an international symposium held in Jerusalem. The publication ‘Religion and Democracy in Contemporary Europe’, including the main contributions to the Jerusalem symposium, is available on NEF’s website at www.nefic.org
The Religion and Democracy in Europe Initiative is based on the partnership between several foundations and has been developed under my chairmanship, with the participation of Hywel Ceri Jones, NEF European Policy Adviser, and the coordination of Cristina Pineda Polo. The Initiative aims to contribute to the public debate on issues of strategic importance for the future of European societies such as the relation between religion and the state and religion and society.
